Our New Years Resolution, 2018!

Monday 1 January 2018

Two years ago, as midnight approached on the 31st December, myself and Darius turned to each other and said, “This year, we’ll get a star rating.”

Exactly one year later on New Year’s Eve, as midnight approached, myself and Darius turned to each other and said, “THIS year, we’ll DEFINITELY get a star rating!”

And yesterday, 31st December 2017, as midnight approached and we watched the wonderful fireworks display on the BBC, we raised our glasses and said “WE WILL GET A STAR RATING THIS YEAR IF IT KILLS US!”

It’s not that we’ve been denied a star rating, or rejected at all -  we just haven’t applied for one yet!

Once you apply for a star rating, you will soon receive a visit from a ‘mystery guest’.  You don’t know who they are – they might be male, female, young, old, travelling alone or in a group.  But their sole purpose is to appraise your establishment and award a star rating at the end of their stay.  I’m not going to lie, it’s a daunting prospect!

And so, we’ve spend the past two years making sure our B&B is something we can be extremely proud of.  We’ve renovated every room and bathroom, and upgraded the breakfast offering to make use of our fabulous local suppliers.  We’d like to think we have a good rapport with our guests – especially our regulars – and always endeavour to make our guests’ stay a positive one.

We’d be happy with a 3* award, delighted with a 4* and over the moon with a 5*!  We’ll be submitting our application soon and will keep everyone updated.

You can read the criteria for each star rating below.  What do you think we’ll get?

Guest Accommodation Star Ratings (AA)

1 star: Minimum quality requirements for cleanliness, maintenance, hospitality, facilities and services. A cooked or substantial continental breakfast is served in a dining room or eating area, or bedroom only.

2 stars: Courteous service, well-maintained beds. Breakfast prepared with a good level of care.

3 stars: Friendly welcome, and good-quality, well-presented beds and furniture. A choice of good-quality, freshly cooked food is available at breakfast.

4 stars: Attentive, more personalised service. At least half of the bedrooms are en suite or have private bathrooms. Very good beds and high quality furniture. Breakfast offers a greater choice, and fresh ingredients are cooked and presented with a high level of care.

5 stars: Awareness of each guest's needs with nothing being too much trouble. All bedrooms are en suite or have a private bathroom. Excellent quality beds and furnishings. Breakfast includes specials/home-made items, high quality ingredients, and fresh local produce.
